FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is forestry mulching?

Forestry mulching is a method of quickly and easily reclaiming your land by clearing forest undergrowth, brush, invasive species, small trees, etc. and turning them into mulch. Depending on the customer preferences, the mulched material can remain and will soon return nutrients to the soil through decomposition or can be raked up and carried off site.

What size trees can be mulched?

I can mulch material up to eight inches in diameter. For trees larger than eight inches in diameter, it is usually more efficient to cut and remove the trunk and mulch the branches, as it would take longer to turn the entire trunk into mulch.

What else can you mulch?

Beside trees and brush, I will commonly remove invasive species such as buckthorn and sumac. These can easily be mulched returning the local habitat to the native species.

How many acres can you clear in a day?

The quick answer is anywhere between one and ten acres. It really depends on several factors: material, terrain, and maneuverability. Material: Brush is much easier and quicker to mulch than trees and I can do several acres in one day. Terrain: Sloping land can be more challenging to navigate than flat ground and can take more time. Maneuverability: Some customers request underbrush of a forest to be cleared and working around trees can add time to completion.

Why mulch rather than traditional land clearing methods?

Forestry mulching is faster, easier, and more cost effective than traditional methods. It eliminates the need for large earth moving equipment and is more localized with less impact on the environment. Since mulching leaves the topsoil and the root system in place you also eliminate the need for erosion control.

What time of year is best to mulch on my land?

I can mulch in any season. It can actually be easier to mulch during colder months when the leaves have fallen because it increases visibility and there is less organic material to mulch.

How much does mulching cost?

Cost will vary based mainly on material. Each job is different and I like to conduct a walkthrough before giving you an estimate of time and cost.

What type of equipment do you use?

I use the Cat HM418 forestry mulching attachment. The power needed to operate this forestry mulching attachment requires a machine capable of delivering high flow hydraulics of 41 gpm, spinning the drum at 2200 rpm. The machine I use is a Cat 299 D3 XE compact track loader. In addition, I have several attachments including a grapple bucket for moving larger trees, dirt bucket, and leveling bar to leave behind a clean work site to the customer’s satisfaction.
